Who are they?

There are two different types of surrogate mothers a traditional surrogate mother and a gestonial surrogate mother. A traditional surrogate mother is when artificial insemination occures which first made surrogacy possible. A traditional surrogate is a woman who is artificially inseminated with the father's sperm. She then carries the baby and delivers it for the parents to take care of. A traditional surrogate is the baby's biological mother. That is because it was her eggs that were fertilized by the father's sperm. Donor sperm can also be used for a traditional surrogacy. A gestional surrogate mother is when vitro fertilization which occures now and makes it possible to harvest eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father, and place the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate. The surrogate then carries the baby until birth. A gestational surrogate has no genetic links to the child. That's because it wasn't her egg that was used in the first place. A gestational surrogate is called the "birth mother" but is not biological kid. The biological mother, though, is still the woman whose egg were fertilized in the first place and therefor is linked to the kid by blood.
