History of Surrogate Mothers
Modern Surrogacy-
Legal surrogacy first came about in the 1970s, this was the case of Baby M.
It was that same lawyer who when to a company which arranges many surrogate births every single day.
During that same time, surrogacy and surrogates were every where in the international news talking about the 'first test tube' baby, which was Louise Joy Brown. Although this was not techniacally a surrogacy situation, this is what started the way towards gestational surrogacy.
In the 1980s, the first paid traditional surrogacy happened. In this case, the choosen surrogate mother was 37 years old and she was paid $10,000 for the baby boy.
The procedure was very succesful on a physical and menatal level, the surrogate mother did not first know how hard it would be to let the baby go, she did not know that she would get as close as with him as she thought. That was until the baby arrived and that she had to give him away to the intended parents. After having an experience with surrogacy she decided to become a lawyer and go against surrogacy. She did this because she thought it had a negative aspect on her emotions and not just on her but also her family and even her husband's carrer.
The American Indians-
Many religions and societies thought good of surrogate mothers because they came in aid to other families. Surrogacy was very popular for the American Indians because it would keep there family and blood line continue.
In the 1900s, it would happen that an American Indians wife would be found infertile, then the husband would be told to go to the witch doctor by the master of the area. The witch doctor would give her some herbal medicines. It would occur that it wouldn't work therefor the husband had to take another woman as the new mother of the child. This said when the child was born, he would have no contact with his infertile mother and he would stay with his biological mother.
The spanish royals-
There was also surrogacy in Europe, in spain, if the king would not be able to have a child. He was able to take in surrogate mothers and wait until a son was born. When the son would be born the surrogate mother would be nanny to all the children in the kingdom and make the child believe that the King and Queen were his biological parents. There was nothing to ask about their right to the throne.
Eventhough surrogacy can be positive it can also be negative towards all people involved in it. This is why it is important for whoever wants to be surrogate mother to be ready phiscally but also emotionally.
In 1983, there was a first sucess in pregnancy with an egg donation. In this case, the woman was able to give birth to a child through the use of egg donation. This is the event that led in 1985 to gestational surrogacy.
After a few years, surrogacy has become known all over the world and now has more processes and procedure than ever. In fact, over the las few years, in 2001 the oldest surrogate mother gave birth to her grandson and in 2005, a surrogate mother who was 58 years old gave birth to her own twim granddaughters.
Bibical times-
In chapter 16 of the book 'book of genisis' tells a story about Sarah and her husband. Sarah could not give a son to her husband so she decided to give him her servent instead. For them to concieve a son. This is linked to the traditional surrogate mother.
The prehistoric times-
Surrogacy had been very a established practise since prehistoric times, in many different parts of the world. It has also been a huge conception in cultures and they had strong beliefs about this technique and it was so strong that people who would not tolorate or believe in it would be thrown out of their families.
